Ciall nó Míniú (Gaeilge):
i.e. the open ocean outside the bay; by contrast tá faraige mhín sa gcuan. The teann-fharaige commences ó dheas de Dhoivleán, agus ó Charraic na Seasaraí amach.
Sonraí (eolas breise):
This is William's (no. 11) interpretation of the name, but from the gen. form used by Sb (no 1) Caraigín na sean-fharaige, the correct nom. form would seem to be a' tsean-fharaige. As corroboration of this the people of Belmullet speak (in English) of th ' old sea; they believe that in earlier times the sea did not come past the line between Cleggan Head and Áird Mhór.
