Note the plur. is slámaíl: tá slámaíl boglaigh air, there are blankets of cloud in the sky portending wet weather (MCd). In words meaning 'shower', e.g. crap, and 'rain-cloud', slám, -aíl < -ghail has the force of a plur. ending; cf. T. de Bhaldraithe in Éigse, vii, 153. Possibly we see the genesis of this development in such phrases as tonngal fola in Van Hamel, Compert Con Culainn, p. 117, line 9.
